Nicklyn Manuel

She descends from a proud line: on her father's side, Hiruharama and Rāhui, whāngai to Matekino Taiapa and Pera Reedy; on her mother’s side, Whāngārā-mai-Tawhiti and Te Rawheoro. Her whānau connection to the land and its people is deep and meaningful—and it’s this connection that shapes everything she does in business.

Guided by an independent spirit formed early in life, Nicklyn brings that same drive and determination to her mahi. Her passion for carving out her own path in business is matched only by her dedication to kaupapa Māori. Through Pēpi Taiao, she champions Māori designers and New Zealand artisans, creating a space that reflects manaakitanga, whānau, and culture.

Over 90% of Pēpi Taiao’s suppliers are Māori, and te ao Māori is woven throughout every aspect of the business—from te reo Māori in branding, to the warm, whānau-first environment of the store. More than just a retail space, Pēpi Taiao is a safe and welcoming haven for māmā, pēpi, and whānau.

Nicklyn’s journey is deeply supported by her own whānau, especially her tamariki, who remain her biggest inspiration. She sees her business as a legacy for them—a way to show what’s possible when you back yourself and your people.

Her advice for aspiring Ngati Porou entrepreneurs? “Back yourself. Don’t wait for the perfect moment—just start. Keep your kaupapa at the centre, and lean on your whānau. If you know your why, the rest will follow.”
