Moana Williams

Originally from Tokomaru Bay, Moana was raised by her great-grandmother, Nanny Frances Williams (née Ryland) of Te Whānau ā Ruataupare. Nanny Frances married twice—first to Whare Pahina (father of Moana’s grandmother Mere), and later to a Williams from Ruatoria. Moana's grandmother Mere and her sister Henrietta both married into the Maxwell family, and Nanny Henrietta was among the founding pioneers of the kōhanga reo movement.

Nanny Frances’ kawmate lies at Ariuru Marae, and the kōhanga located behind it is named in her honour — Tau ka wehea ki Paranihi. Moana also whakapapas to Hinemauria Marae in Mangatuna through the Hautapu whānau.

Now based in Te Upoko o te Ika (Wellington), Moana continues to draw strength and inspiration from her East Coast roots. She returns home whenever possible — her daughter adores the coastal sunrises, while her sons are passionate about the hunting grounds they explore together.

As a way to share her craft, Moana offers kitset tukutuku panels through Tuitui Designs.
