Akaroa Salmon

Akaroa Salmon have been farming King Salmon in Akaroa Harbour since 1985. Proudly 50% Māori owned, through our partnerships with Ngati Porou and local mana whenua Ōnuku Rūnanga, and 100% New Zealand owned. With low stocking densities and no antibiotics, pesticides, or GMOs, we raise some of the finest King Salmon in the world.
Akaroa Harbour sits on Banks Peninsula, on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. It's where we've been raising King Salmon since 1985, when the founding Bates Family released their first smolt into the harbour. Forty years on, and we're still here, still the world's smallest ocean salmon farm, and still focused on doing things the same way.
Our fish grow slowly in the cold, clear water of the harbour. We keep stocking densities low, which means less stress on the fish and less impact on the environment around them. No antibiotics, no pesticides, no GMOs. We have an intergenerational view of development so that our mokopuna can enjoy the taonga that is Akaroa Harbour.
Akaroa King Salmon is served in premium restaurants across New Zealand and exported internationally. The jobs, the export revenue, and reputation we build for New Zealand products all flow back into our partnership, our people, and the long-term care of our harbour.
